MY BOY GYPSY
Died 9th January 2008, aged 26 years
When I first met Gypsy I hadn’t ridden for years, was nervous
of horses after a bad riding accident as a youngster and didn’t
know if trying to get back in the saddle was a good idea or not.
He was the star of the riding stables, the horse everyone loved.
The big, gentle cob they put the nervous riders on. When the riding
school closed down 2 years later and the horses were being sold
off I took out a loan and bought him, having never owned a horse
of my own and having no idea where to begin looking after him. Luckily,
as well as giving me my confidence back he was easy to look after
and I loved every minute of being with him; even down to getting
up at 5.30am. He was funny, lovable, stubborn, mischievous and just
brilliant. I kept him at DIY livery for years and when work became
difficult he went on loan to a family nearby who loved and pampered
him almost as much as I did.
When he came back he looked no different than the day he went –
he never seemed to age. He went into retirement and went to live
with Liz at Fisher’s Farm which he loved. He made new friends
easily, got himself a girlfriend and settled in easily. So, it was
with great sadness that I received the news that he had an inoperable
tumour. It is a comfort to know that his last few weeks were enjoyable
and in a place he was very happy. He sadly got taken by the horsy
angels on the 9th of January 2008, but he will always be in my heart
and head. There’s a definite horse-shaped hole in my life,
and there isn’t a day goes by when I don’t think about
him. I have his ashes, photos, some of his mane, his shoes…and
the best memories of a horse that brought a lot of love and fun
into my life. I will never forget him.
